A Journey with Makula
At 19 years old, Uwase Mariam is a shining example of excellence, discipline and quiet determination. A Senior Three student at Everlight College, Mariam is known for her strong academic performance, creativity and unwavering focus on her future. Her dream is beautifully unique; to become both an accountant and an interior designer, blending precision with creativity to build a meaningful career.
Mariam joined the Makula Fund for Children in 2022, and since then, she has consistently excelled academically. She is always among the top five students in her class, often emerging as either the best or second best; a testament to her hard work, consistency, and commitment to excellence.
She comes from a family of five children and is the third born. Like many young people, her journey into the Makula family began in a simple yet life-changing way. Mariam first encountered Makula when she noticed children receiving breakfast. Passing by, she joined them for a meal; an encounter that led her to Dr. Hugo Kamya, who listened to her story and helped her formally join the program. What began as a moment of kindness became a turning point in her life.
Since starting her secondary education, Makula has been a constant source of support for Mariam by providing not only material assistance but also encouragement, stability and hope. She speaks with deep gratitude about how Makula has walked with her through her secondary school journey, enabling her to focus on her studies and her dreams.
“I thank Makula for being there for me since I started secondary school,” Mariam says. “Because of this support, I am able to study well and remain focused on my future.”
A Prayer Bigger Than Herself
Beyond her own success, Mariam carries a generous heart. She prays that the Makula Fund for Children grows to be known both nationally and internationally, so that many more children in need can receive the same support and opportunity she has been given. Her gratitude is matched by a sincere desire to see others lifted as well.
With academic excellence, creative ambition and a heart rooted in thankfulness, Uwase Mariam is steadily building a future full of promise. Her story reminds us that sometimes, all it takes is one act of kindness to change a life and through Makula, that kindness continues to multiply.
